In the doldrums of the winter, when the days are shorter and the cold forces us inside more, the Poinsettia has become an American tradition for the holiday season. Native to Mexico, they were first introduced to our country in 1828, long before the twinkle of LED lights, Crayola crayons, and plastic decorations. In the Newport RI mansions, huge spheres of these wonderful flowers would be hung from the ceilings and gathered about the floors for the joy and levity they spread.
The humble Poinsettia must surely have been a cheering companion during these earlier years of our country. It is no wonder that they became the patron flower of American Christmas. With their bright red leaves and yellow flowers, some see the deepest of Christian symbolism, the star of Bethlehem and the sacrificial blood of Christ for us.
Yearly we deck our halls, well, really the sanctuary, with these wonderful plants as both a reminder of the season and a way to remember loved one's who no longer are with us. Please use the order form on the link below to order your poinsettias this holiday season. Remember to include all the information that you would like us to use in the remembrance insert on Christmas eve. Cost per plant is $8.
